Three Tequilas to Up Your Sipping Game

If you hear “tequila” and you think “shots,” it may be time for an update. These days, tequila is all grown up, and some of the best tequilas have much more in common with a nice glass of scotch than a jager bomb. These sophisticated spirits are complex, fragrant, and best sipped slowly.

All tequila comes from the Tequila region of Mexico, where the red volcanic soil is perfectly suited for growing agave plants.

In fact, the Mexican government has held intellectual property rights over the term “tequila” since 1974. Just as “Champagne” is always from the Champagne region of France, “tequila” is always from the Tequila region of Mexico.

While a nice tequila can be pricey, there are plenty of mid-range tequilas that won’t break the bank. So without further ado, here are our favorite sipping tequilas with flavors worth savoring.

CavAgave Blanco Tequila

Don't let the price tag fool you. This reasonably-priced blanco offers a depth of flavor which rightfully earned a perfect 100 point score and Double Gold at the 2023 Proof Awards.

The clear, crisp notes of agave, pepper, and vanilla can be enjoyed as a refreshing sipper or an elevated mixer. Made from 100% blue agaves that are harvested and 2x distilled in the highlands of Jalisco, this quality tequila will dazzle you with only the most authentic Mexican flavors.

Cazadores Tequila Blanco

Legend has it that Cazadores, or “The Hunters,” was named for the quest of the founder to perfect his tequila recipe over the years.

This lovely silver tequila hasn’t been aged, which allows you to enjoy the intensity of the agave plant with its natural sweetness. With citrusy, herbal aromas and a smooth finish, this tequila is delicious sipped neat or mixed into a margarita.

Casamigos Tequila Anejo

You may have heard of this brand because of its famous founder, George Clooney. But don’t let the Hollywood pedigree fool you. Casamigos has won tons of tequila awards, and it’s no wonder—this is one of the smoothest, most natural tasting tequilas we’ve tried, and we absolutely love the flavor, which comes from an 80-hour fermentation process (compared to the average 48 hours). Once you try it, we think a “casamigos and soda” will become one of your new go-to's.
